The Abortionist

Friday, Jan 20 - Saturday, Feb 11
8:00 pm
Thursday - Saturday

The Abortionist: A Woman Against the Law is more relevant than ever. Based on the scholarship of Rickie Solinger, Joel Gersmann wrote a 1995 play on the life of Ruth Barnett, an abortion provider for 50 years, who “undid, a little, the privileged world of men,” all before Roe v. Wade.

Broom Street Theater’s 2023 revisitation of The Abortionist will be presented in Gersmann’s kinoplastic style. Actors will also play scenery and ‘animated’ inanimate objects (such as chairs with opinions) as well as numerous characters.

Walk-up tickets are available for every performance, and are always Pay-What-You-Can.

Online tickets are available at this link.

The February 4 performance will be livestreamed online. For livestream ticket information, click here.

You’ll thrill to the sight of never-before-seen areas of Broom Street’s labyrinthine backstage. You’ll even get to see a dress rehearsal for our latest production of Death Of A Salesman.

View props from our many past productions of Death of A Salesman, including the axe that decapitated Willy Loman, the pike that disemboweled Willy Loman, and the small chunk of steak that asphyxiated Willy Loman.

You’ll see the massive scene shop where we’ve built many of our famous set pieces over the years, including the gibbet on which we hung Willy Loman, the boulder which we rolled down on the head of Willy Loman, and the wooden horse from which a thousand Greek soldiers poured out to massacre Willy Loman.

Visitors are requested to honor all of Broom Street’s superstitions. Do not turn off the ghost light, taunt the spirits of our forebears, or say the name of the “Scottish play”. Should a visitor violate any of these restrictions, Broom Street Theater is not responsible for any unfortunate occurrences that may result. Visitors should be advised that unfortunate occurrences may involve flashing lights and/or fog.
