The Sweet Lowdown is a night of two one-act plays about diabetes by Matthew DeFour and Mary Fairweather Dexter. The plays use different styles to educate the public and debunk the myths about diabetes, both T1D and T2D. The production, opening Oct. 25 at Broom Street Theater in Madison and running for four weekends, was made possible with a grant from the Diabetes Hands Foundation.
The Diabetes Hands Foundation has provided seed grant money to Madison playwrights Matt DeFour and Mary Fairweather Dexter. They will be presenting an evening of two one-act plays addressing Diabetes. The first play “Two Diabetics” tells the story of a Type 1 and a Type 2. The second play “The Sweet Lowdown” combines music, comedy and dance to explain the science, stigma and politics of Diabetes. Heidi Hakseth from the UWSMPH Office of Multicultural Affairs will serve as choreographer for the show. Diabetics and non-Diabetics alike are encouraged to attend for a full evening of entertainment and enlightenment.
The Sweet Lowdown directed by Don Dexter features Mary Fairweather Dexter, Betsy Wood, Emily Cauthen, Victoria Hurwitz, Andy Lindgren, John Morgan and Don Dexter.
Two Diabetiics directed by John Siewert features Donnovan Moen, Wendi Stearns Peters, Zach Heise, Andrea Kleiner, Aurelia Khorsand, Marty Peters and Ben Doran.

Math! A word that strikes fear into many a heart. But why? Splendor in the Math, a new comedy by Scott Feiner, uses innovative staging and humor to explore the fear of mathematics and show how complex math concepts relate to our everyday. Feiner’s work will subtract the fear of math and replace it instead with multiple laughs and divide us from the obstacles that keep us from enjoying the math in our daily lives.
Splendor in the Math marks Feiner’s return to the Broom Street Stage after 6 years in New York, New York. The cast boasts Broom Street veterans Kate Boomsma, Tracy Doyle, Eric Holz, Heather Renken, Patrick Robbins, John Siewert, and Brent West, and introduces Heidi Hinshaw to the Madison stage.
Opening February 17, Splendor runs for four weekends on every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening at 8 PM. Each Thursday’s performance will feature a talkback with local mathematicians after the show, with a special event on March 8 to celebrate the concept of E8. This premier production of Iceland, by Michael Tooher,marks the first time the playwright’s work will be performed in Wisconsin, with Madison Theater veteran Collin Erickson making his directorial debut.
